Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on obtaining, and maintaining, a life that is meaningful and based on personal values - regardless of the barriers life may present.

Originally developed by Dr. Stephen Hayes, ACT is an empirically supported therapy that: (1) helps individuals to define and clarify their values and what a values-based life would look like, (2) establish specific goals that are designed to help individuals engage in behaviors that feel important and meaningful, (3) help raise awareness of barriers to these meaningful actions and (4) teaches practical, effective strategies for continually striving towards a values-based life.
